USAID launches Uzbekistan's first Green Hydrogen Hub to boost clean energy goals

USAID launches Uzbekistan's first Green Hydrogen Hub to boost clean energy goals

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced an initiative aimed at bolstering Uzbekistan’s renewable energy aspirations through the establishment of the country's inaugural Green Hydrogen Hub on February 29, U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan reported. This project, introduced in collaboration with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy, signifies a pivotal step towards realizing the nation’s clean energy objectives.

Green hydrogen, derived from renewable energy sources, stands as a beacon of hope in the global quest for decarbonization. With hydrogen emerging as a key player in energy storage and transportation, Uzbekistan is keen to harness its potential. The country has set targets, aiming for 25% renewable energy generation by 2030 and ultimately achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

In a strategic move to support Uzbekistan’s green energy endeavors, USAID is spearheading the creation of the Green Hydrogen Hub. This initiative seeks to enhance the nation’s expertise in clean energy technologies, thereby shaping Uzbekistan’s future energy landscape in alignment with its renewable energy strategy.

The inauguration of the Green Hydrogen Hub was marked by a high-level meeting attended by Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Umid Mamadaminov, and Acting Director of USAID Mission to Uzbekistan, Edward Michalski, among other key stakeholders from the energy sector. Discussions centered around the initial phases of the Hydrogen Hub concept, outlining priorities and action plans.

Edward Michalski emphasized USAID’s unwavering commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives in Central Asia.

"Our commitment is rooted in the belief that a sustainable future depends on our collective efforts to transition to cleaner, more efficient energy sources," Edward Michalski stated, underlining the critical importance of such initiatives in combating climate change.

USAID has previously fostered collaboration between the University of Delaware, USA, and Tashkent State Technical University to develop a curriculum on green hydrogen, integrated into the latter’s master’s degree program. This educational partnership underscores USAID’s holistic approach toward nurturing talent and expertise in the clean energy sector.

The Green Hydrogen Hub initiative entails a comprehensive assessment encompassing factors such as renewable energy potential, water availability, clean hydrogen production methods, and export prospects. Site evaluation, storage design, logistics planning, market analysis, regulatory assessments, and environmental impact considerations are integral components in identifying optimal locations for hub operation.

This pioneering endeavor is made possible through USAID’s flagship regional energy project, Power Central Asia, boasting a total budget of $39mn over a five-year period. The project aims to bolster the energy sector’s performance, expedite clean energy development, and fortify energy security through enhanced regional connectivity and cross-border electricity trade. To date, USAID has catalyzed $2.2bn in clean energy investments and facilitated the installation of 2,241 megawatts of clean energy capacity across Central Asia through this transformative initiative.

Earlier USAID collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Committee of Veterinary and Livestock Development of Uzbekistan to initiate a project focused on strengthening Uzbekistan's capacity to address animal and public health threats. Led by the FAO Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases and operating under USAID’s Global Health Security program, the project represents a move towards improving the country's ability to prevent, detect, and respond to health risks.

The inaugural workshop for the project, held in Tashkent, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from Uzbekistan's agriculture, veterinary, and livestock sectors, as well as international organizations, national research institutions, and civil society. Participants were briefed on the project's goals, endorsed its yearly work plan, and engaged in discussions regarding key activities and implementation strategies.
