Kazakhstan's Minister of Energy, Almasadam Satkaliyev, announced that Germany is planning to increase its oil imports from Kazakhstan to 200,000 tons per month. The oil is transported to Germany via the Druzhba main oil pipeline. From May to October 2023, Kazakhstan exported approximately 100,000 tons of oil to Germany each month. This figure rose to 154,000 tons in November 2023.
In 2023, Kazakhstan exported 993,000 tons of oil to Germany. As for now, Germany is looking to increase Kazakhstani oil imports to 2.4 mn tons per year. Last year, the European Union accounted for 46.6 mn tons or 66% of all Kazakhstani oil exports, which totalled 70.5 mn tons.
Despite shipping 1.2 mn tons of oil to Germany’s Schwedt in 2023, Kazakhstan’s main buyers are Italy, France, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and other EU member states. In 2021, Kazakhstan exported 49 mn tons of oil to Europe, followed by 45 mn tons in 2022, and 52 mn tons in 2023.
Satkaliyev stated that Kazakhstan is a reliable supplier of oil for Europe, contributing to its energy security. The country is interested in expanding such cooperation. Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, France, Turkey, and Spain are the key consumers of Kazakhstan's oil.
In December 2022, KazTransOil reached an agreement with Russian state-owned company Transneft concerning the export of 1.2 mn tons of oil to Germany. Although the export was supposed to start in January 2023, it began in February 2023, when Kazakhstan shipped its first 20,000 tons to Germany. An additional 20,000 tons were sent in March and 50,000 tons in April. From May to October 2023, the company exported 100,000 tons of oil to Germany each month.
