Women in Uzbekistan have been granted official permission to operate trucks and buses, as announced by the Ministry of Transport. This decision, supported by a resolution from the Cabinet of Ministers, marks a notable departure from previous regulations that restricted women from driving certain types of vehicles.
A statement from the Ministry of Transport highlighted the importance of these changes, stating,
"With the abolition of old norms, the legal framework was strengthened allowing women to work in additional professions and industries. This has also helped ensure gender equality in the transport sector and involve women in driving large capacity buses (electric buses)."
The Ministry emphasized that modern vehicles' technical specifications enable women to carry out their work comfortably and safely in these roles. The decision to allow women to operate trucks and buses aligns with broader efforts in Uzbekistan to promote gender equality and empower women in various sectors of the economy.
Earlier Daryo reported that the "Gender Data Compass 2023" rating, conducted by the global non-profit organization Open Data Watch, has unveiled insights into the accessibility and openness of gender-related data on a global scale.
