The representatives of Uzbekistan’s electoral bodies have expressed their interest in observing the upcoming Russian presidential election, as per the Central Election Commission (CEC) of the Russian Federation, Kursiv reported. This marks a significant development in international relations and the transparency of the electoral process.
In addition to Uzbekistan, representatives from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and India have also expressed interest in observing the voting process. This broad international interest underscores the global significance of the Russian presidential election. The Russian CEC had previously extended invitations to 95 states to observe the elections. It is expected that between 500 to 1,000 people will be observing the voting process.
Historic Three-Day Voting Process
The Russian presidential election is scheduled for March 17, 2024, and will last three days. This will be the first time in the history of the Russian Federation that voting will be held for three days.
Background
The Russian Federation elects a president as the head of state and a parliament, one of the two chambers of the Federal Assembly. The president is elected for, at most, two consecutive six-year terms by the people. This will be the eighth presidential election in the country.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, first assumed the presidency in 2000 and was subsequently re-elected in 2004, 2012, and 2018. His current term is set to conclude in 2024. However, due to constitutional amendments, he is eligible to remain in office for an additional 12 years, instead of taking a six-year break.
The Russian electoral process has been subject to criticism in the past, with allegations of electoral fraud and lack of freedom and fairness. However, the presence of international observers is seen as a step towards greater transparency and accountability.
The interest from Uzbekistan’s electoral bodies is particularly noteworthy. Uzbekistan has a bicameral parliament, with the president elected for five years by the people. The last presidential elections in Uzbekistan were held on July 9, 2023.
