The Taliban’s treatment of Afghan women is becoming a major concern for Washington, Aamaj News reports. Vedant Patel, the deputy press secretary of the U.S. State Department, has stated that the Taliban’s actions are unacceptable to the United States.
Taliban’s actions against women
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has reported that the Taliban has captured mostly Tajik women and girls from Dasht Barchi, an area mainly inhabited by Hazaras, as well as from the Khairkhana area of Kabul. The Taliban’s treatment of women has been widely criticized, with their actions being described as gender apartheid. Women’s rights have been severely restricted, with limitations on education, work, and freedom of movement.

Humanitarian aid to Afghanistan
The U.S. has been a significant donor of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, providing more than $1.1bn in aid since August 2021. This aid is distributed through independent organizations working in Afghanistan, ensuring that it does not pass through Taliban coffers.
