The Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan has ratified the Treaty between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran on the transfer of convicted persons. The Law was considered at the 49th plenary meeting of the Senate on January 20.
Treaty Details
The Treaty, signed on June 18, 2023, during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Iran, creates a legal basis for citizens of Uzbekistan and Iran, who have been deprived of liberty as a result of committing crimes, to serve sentences imposed by the court in their own country. It also provides for bilateral cooperation in the field of transfer of convicts.
Legal Framework and Efficiency
The ratification and entry into force of this Treaty form the legal framework in the field of transfer of convicted persons. It is expected to increase the efficiency of interaction between the authorized bodies of the two states in this area. However, the exact mechanisms and procedures for this increased efficiency are yet to be detailed.
Impact on Convicts and Families
During the discussion, the senators noted that serving sentences for convicts in their own country will allow them to regularly see close relatives. This is expected to have a positive impact on family relationships and contribute to the adaptation of convicts to public life. However, the specifics of how this adaptation process will be facilitated and monitored are not yet clear.
Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan has officially ratified an agreement with Italy regarding the transfer of convicted individuals.
