The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, embarked on his first official visit to the Holy See, at the gracious invitation of Pope Francis on January 19, Akorda reported. The meeting, held at the Vatican, was marked by expressions of gratitude, solidarity, and a commitment to fostering peace and harmony among diverse communities.
President Tokayev conveyed his appreciation to the Supreme Pontiff for his unwavering dedication to the betterment of humanity across the globe. He commended Pope Francis for being an inspirational figure whose prayers for peace have resonated not only within the hearts of Catholics but have also kindled hope among citizens of various faiths, including the substantial Catholic community in Central Asia.
"Today, multiethnic and multiconfessional Kazakhstan, historically positioned at the crossroads of various civilizations, takes pride in being home to the largest Catholic community in Central Asia," remarked President Tokayev.
He underscored the significant contributions of followers of all faiths to the construction of a just and inclusive society, emphasizing the Kazakh model of "unity-in-diversity" as a foundation for peace and national dialogue.
President Tokayev reiterated his commitment to fostering religious freedom, emphasizing its integral role in his presidential agenda. He pointed out that Kazakhstan has created a diverse landscape of places of worship for people of various faiths, reflecting the country's dedication to ensuring the coexistence of different religious communities.
Referring to Pope Francis' annual "State of the World" address, President Tokayev expressed his complete solidarity with the Pontiff's assertion that;
"Peace is primarily a gift of God ... Yet it is also a great responsibility incumbent upon all of us."
He called for collective efforts to preach and practice peace, facilitate dialogue across cultures and religions, and drive development for the benefit of people of all faiths.
In the context of bilateral relations, President Tokayev highlighted Kazakhstan's profound appreciation for its long-standing partnership with the Holy See. He acknowledged the strong foundation of sincere friendship, harmony, and mutual respect, with active political dialogue and ongoing efforts to enhance the legal framework between the two entities.
Turning to global affairs, President Tokayev expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for his active personal endeavors and spiritual support in the quest to end conflicts and divisions plaguing the world.
