In the Q4 2023, American car manufacturer Tesla announced the delivery of 484,507 electric vehicles, placing it in second place behind the Chinese group BYD for the first time, Le Figaro reports. BYD delivered 526,409 vehicles between October and December 2023.
Annual deliveries
Despite trailing in the Q4, Tesla maintained its pole position over the entire year with 1.81 mn vehicles delivered worldwide. This represents an increase of 38% over one year. In contrast, BYD delivered 1.57 mn vehicles to their owners, marking a significant increase of 73%.
Production volumes and goals
Tesla warned on October 2 that its production and delivery volumes had been affected in the third quarter by planned maintenance operations. Despite these challenges, Tesla produced 494,989 vehicles between October and December, bringing the total for the year to 1,845,985 vehicles. This represents an increase of 35%.
Tesla had set a goal of producing 1.8 mn vehicles in 2023, which it confirmed in mid-October despite its difficulties in the Q3. The company expressed its intention to increase its production “as quickly as possible” and warned that "some years, it is possible that we will grow faster and others slower".
On the other hand, BYD produced 518,974 vehicles in the Q4. The manufacturer announced that it had produced 1.59 mn electric vehicles over the whole year, marking an increase of 73.32%.
Market position and share performance
The Shenzhen-based group BYD, which counts Warren Buffett among its shareholders, crossed the symbolic mark of five million electric vehicles produced in October. Despite these achievements, around 3:20 p.m. GMT, Tesla shares fell slightly (-0.09%) on the New York Stock Exchange.
