On, December 1, unknown gunmen unleashed terror in the Jibril district of the Herat region, resulting in the tragic deaths of two Shia clerics and six other individuals. The incident occurred in the Korah Melli area when unidentified assailants opened fire on a three-wheeler, Daryo correspondent in Afghanistan reported.
The victims have been identified as prominent Shia clerics, Muhammad Mohsen Hamidi and Muhammad Taghi Sadeghi, who were targeted along with four other civilians. Additionally, at least two individuals sustained injuries during the attack, prompting an outpouring of grief and anger from the residents.
Following the incident, residents of the Jibril district took to the streets in protest, expressing their anguish and demanding justice for the victims. The atmosphere in the area remains tense as community members grapple with the profound loss and seek answers about the motive behind the targeted attack.
The Taliban's Ministry of Internal Affairs issued a statement condemning the attack on the Shia clerics in Herat province, denouncing it as an act of "terrorism."
As of August 2021, the Taliban had regained control of Afghanistan, marking the end of the U.S.-led military presence in the country after almost 20 years. The withdrawal of international forces led to a swift takeover by the Taliban, culminating in the fall of Kabul on August 15, 2021.
One of the most significant incidents following the Taliban's takeover was a suicide bombing outside Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport on August 26, 2021. The attack targeted crowds near the airport, resulting in the deaths of numerous Afghan civilians and U.S. service members. The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), an affiliate of the global ISIS network, claimed responsibility for the attack.
