The Sanitary and Epidemiological Service has reported a measles outbreak in Namangan. As of now, 340 treatment spots have been established in the region for the inpatient treatment of suspected measles patients. Of these, 240 are located in the regional infectious disease hospital, and 100 are in the Beshkapa regional children’s hospital.
Out of the 285 patients, 62% are children under the age of 1 year, and 25% are children aged 1-3 years. In total, 735 cases of measles have been confirmed in laboratory studies in the provinces in the first 10 months of 2023.
In November this year, 3 mn doses of measles vaccines were purchased using funds from the state budget of the Republic of Uzbekistan. These vaccines are intended for the surveillance layer, children who have not been immunized for certain reasons, as well as children aged 6 months to 5 years who have been in contact with a measles patient and are at risk. The vaccines are currently being distributed by region.
Due to the influx of children with measles, the infectious disease hospital has had to turn away some patients, many of whom are being treated at home. Even patients with hepatitis are being relocated to other areas, and the vacated spots are being filled with measles patients. Children are only admitted in critical condition.
