Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the Gaza Strip situation at the 16th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit in Tashkent, expressing concern over the silence surrounding the plight of Palestinians.
Erdogan highlighted the devastating toll in the blockaded Gaza Strip, stating,
"About 11,000 Palestinians, including women and children, have died, and the world remains silent."
He emphasized the urgency of addressing the escalating conflict, especially in the wake of global challenges like the coronavirus pandemic, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and soaring inflation.
Erdogan said, "While we are looking for ways to effectively deal with these difficulties, the conflict that has escalated in the occupied Palestinian territories has touched our hearts."
The Turkish leader condemned the continuous bombardment of the Gaza Strip by Israel, noting that 73% of the victims were women and children. Erdogan criticized Western countries for not taking decisive action against these attacks, saying,
"Those who turn a blind eye to those who burn the Holy Quran under the pretext of freedom of expression cannot agree with the Palestinian flag."
He stressed the need for Muslim unity and pledged to continue diplomatic efforts for a humanitarian peace and conflict resolution. Erdogan also highlighted the OIC's role in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, urging the organization to raise its voice against the injustices.
Erdogan said,
"If we do not raise our voice today as OIC, as Muslims, when will we raise it again?"
The Turkish leader emphasized the significance of the Economic Cooperation Organization, with a population of 500mn and a total income of $1.5 trillion, in addressing crucial global issues.
