To combat air pollution, the movement of cars that contribute to environmental degradation may soon be completely prohibited in the large cities of Uzbekistan, such as Tashkent, Nukus, and regional city centres.
According to a recent resolution, the control of vehicle emissions will be enforced through laboratory tests conducted in several stages:
- Starting from July 1, 2024, it will be mandatory for vehicles used by state and economic management bodies, state enterprises, and organizations with a state share in the authorized capital to comply with emission standards.
- From January 1, 2025, compliance with emission standards will be encouraged voluntarily for vehicles used by other legal entities.
- From July 1, 2025, compliance will be encouraged voluntarily for vehicles used by individuals.
If a vehicle exceeds the emission standards and harms the atmosphere, legal entities will be subject to compensation payments. Additionally, starting from September 1, 2025, the use of vehicles that do not meet emission standards will be prohibited in Tashkent, Nukus, and regional city centres. Similarly, from the same date, measures will be implemented to prohibit individuals from using vehicles that do not comply with emission standards in the aforementioned areas.
These measures aim to curtail air pollution and establish a cleaner and healthier environment in Uzbekistan's urban centres. By targeting vehicles that contribute to harmful emissions, the government seeks to protect public health and improve the overall quality of life in the affected cities.
