News about the construction of a sanatorium on the site of the Maidanak Astronomical Observatory in Kashkadarya has circulated. However, the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan has rejected this proposal.
Officials from the Kashkadarya region granted an interview on the TV channel "Uzbekistan 24," during which they expressed their opinion that the Maidanak astronomical observatory, belonging to the Institute of Astronomy of the Academy of Sciences, has been non-operational for many years and will be replaced with a sanatorium.
In response to this situation, the press service of the Academy of Sciences clarified that Maidanak Hill hosts two distinct facilities. The first is the Maidanak Astronomical Observatory, which is affiliated with the Institute of Astronomy of the Academy of Sciences. This observatory is renowned as one of the most advanced scientific and technical establishments in the country and is a source of pride for the Academy of Sciences. It holds a unique position as one of the top five observatories globally due to its exceptional astroclimate.
The observatory conducts significant research, leading to the publication of over 50 articles and several dissertations in esteemed international scientific journals annually. Additionally, the Institute of Astronomy and the Maidanak Observatory are actively engaged in more than 30 international projects. In summary, the Maidanak Observatory is a highly active and unique asset of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which is commemorating its 80th anniversary.
The press release emphasizes that the president closely oversees this exceptional facility, and substantial efforts have been made to enhance the observatory and its infrastructure. Recent developments include road repairs leading to the observatory and the installation of an optical fiber internet network.
The second facility on Maidanak Hill is the "Maidanak" measuring complex (Izmeritelnyi kompleks "Maidanak"), which was previously under the Ministry of Defense of Uzbekistan and has remained inactive in recent years. This hill is situated four kilometers east of the Maidanak observatory.
The Academy of Sciences' press service has disclosed plans to establish a tourist zone in the area, specifically on the second facility's grounds, the "Maidanak" measuring complex. They have urged officials to accurately distinguish between these two entities.
In February 2022, it was announced that a "Maidanak" tourist and recreational zone would be developed in the Qamashi district of the Kashkadarya region. Specialists visited the "Maidanak" observatory, situated at an elevation of 2,650 meters, to discuss arrangements for pastures, camping, glamping, eco-houses, and light construction containers across the 7,900-hectare spruce-covered expanse of the Maidanak mountains.
