A United Nations delegation, led by Vladanka Andreeva, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, recently visited the Karabakh region. The team included various UN officials and representatives from organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN Refugee Agency, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization.
During their visit to Khankendi, the mission found no damage to public infrastructure or reports of violence against civilians following the recent ceasefire. However, they noted the limited presence of the local population, estimated at 50 to 1,000 ethnic Armenians.
The mission couldn't assess farming conditions but didn't observe any agricultural damage or dead animals along the road. It's uncertain if the local population plans to return, emphasizing the need for trust-building efforts. While traveling to the border crossing, the mission saw a few civilian vehicles heading to Armenia. In Aghdam, they observed destruction and ongoing reconstruction.
The UN in Azerbaijan intends to continue visiting the region and called for protecting the rights of the remaining local population, expressing readiness to support them in collaboration with the Azerbaijani government and partners.
Recent developments in the region include the arrest of former presidents of Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia filing a lawsuit to the ICJ against Azerbaijan, and the announcement of the region's dissolution by the next year.
