Media reports indicate that an earthquake measuring 6.2 MPV and 11.8 energy class was detected on October 1 at 3:30 a.m. The epicenter was located 122 km South of Almaty in Kyrgyzstan at coordinates 42.12 curriculum and 77.08° v, with a depth of 10 km. The earthquake was felt in Almaty with a rating of 2-3 points according to the MS-64 scale.
Later on, reports emerged that the Seismological Experimental Expedition of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Kyrgyzstan reported a magnitude 6.2 earthquake south of Lake Issyk-Kul.
On August 19, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Kazakhstan at 9:00 a.m. Its epicenter was 551 km west of Almaty with a depth of 15 km, and it was felt in the Tulkubassky district and the village of Amangeldy (2 points). Two days prior, on August 17, an earthquake was recorded 383 km southwest of Almaty.
According to a draft plan released on the government portal, Kazakhstan has a significant seismic area, with 40% of its land classified as such. The southeast region has a high earthquake risk due to past severe earthquakes with forces ranging from 8 to 10 points. As of 2023, over 7mn people live in Kazakhstan's highly seismic regions, which include over 400 cities and settlements and where over 50% of the country's industrial potential is concentrated. The East region may experience seismic events up to 8 points. In comparison, the South may experience up to 8-9 points, and the Central and Western areas may experience earthquakes with a magnitude of 6-7. Similarly, the government has identified the need for thorough disaster preparedness and response plans in these areas.
