Russian President Vladimir Putin has commented on the legal cases against former US President Donald Trump, stating that they are politically motivated and emblematic of the corruption within American politics, Al Jazeera reported on September 12. Trump, who is the frontrunner Republican candidate for the 2024 United States presidential elections, is currently facing multiple criminal cases, including allegations related to his attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat to President Joe Biden.
Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum gathering in Vladivostok on September 12, Putin criticized the American political system, saying,
"As for Trump, for us what is happening in today’s conditions, in my opinion, is good because it shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others democracy."
Putin went on to characterize the legal actions against Trump as "the persecution of a political rival for political reasons." He emphasized that these proceedings are occurring publicly, both in the United States and on the global stage.
During Trump's tenure as president, he had consistently praised his amicable relations with Putin. Additionally, Trump had recently claimed that if he were to regain the presidency, he could swiftly resolve the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Responding to this, Putin stated,
"We hear Mr. Trump say he will solve pressing problems in a few days, including the Ukrainian crisis. Well, this cannot but bring happiness. This is good."
However, Putin dismissed the notion that Trump had any special ties with Russia, asserting that it was "complete nonsense." He also indicated that Russia's relationship with the United States is unlikely to undergo significant changes, regardless of who is in office. Putin criticized the Biden administration, alleging a strong bias against Russia and suggesting that it would be challenging for them to alter the current trajectory of relations between the two countries.
Putin referenced the strained ties between Moscow and Washington during Trump's presidency, which further deteriorated following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Regarding the legal actions against Trump, Putin remarked that they
"show who we are fighting … As they said in Soviet times, 'the bestial face of American imperialism."
In a separate statement, Putin expressed skepticism about Western efforts to hinder China's rise as a global power, hailing Moscow's strong relations with Beijing. He commented on the West's attempts to restrain China's development and noted that such efforts were bound to fail, as he stated,
"They are doing everything to slow down the development of China, but this will not be possible. They are too late. That's it, the train has left."
Putin also criticized the West's decision to supply Ukraine with cluster bombs and depleted uranium munitions, describing it as a "crime." He asserted that while such supplies might prolong the conflict in Ukraine, they would not alter its ultimate outcome.
