Tragedy struck off the coast of the United Arab Emirates as a Bell 212 helicopter crashed during routine training operations, leaving two pilots from Egypt and South Africa missing. The incident has prompted a coordinated response from authorities and aviation agencies.
The crash occurred in the waters off the UAE's coastline, although specific details regarding the location were not immediately disclosed by the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authorities. The Bell 212 helicopter, typically capable of carrying 14 passengers and one pilot, was owned and operated by Aerogulf.
The ill-fated flight departed from Al Maktoum International Airport, Dubai's second airfield, on September 7 night. As per Aerogulf, the mission was part of routine training operations that aimed to connect Al Maktoum International Airport with an offshore oil rig. The United Arab Emirates, a major player in the global energy sector, boasts numerous offshore oil platforms in the Persian Gulf.
In a statement issued following the incident, Aerogulf expressed deep concern for the well-being of their crew members, emphasizing their commitment to cooperating with aviation authorities and rapidly gathering information about the crash.
"We are working with the aviation authorities and doing all we can to gather information as quickly as possible. At this moment, our thoughts and prayers are with our crew and their families," Aerogulf stated.
Aerogulf, which specializes in heavy lift operations and aerial photography flights, has an extensive portfolio of services.
Rescue efforts are currently underway, with recovery teams managing to retrieve crash debris. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate and recover the two missing pilots.
The incident has cast a shadow over the aviation and offshore industries in the region, emphasizing the risks and challenges faced by those operating in the demanding environment of offshore operations.
As investigations into the crash continue, the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authorities, alongside Aerogulf, remain committed to providing updates and ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to ensure the safety of aviation activities in the region.
