Four new astronauts joined the International Space Station (ISS) on August 27, emphasizing the theme of 'unity' as they were welcomed by the existing crew.
The four astronauts—Moghbeli, Mogensen, JAXA's Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos' Konstantin Borisov—arrived on a SpaceX Dragon Endurance spacecraft that launched on August 26 at 3:27 a.m. EDT from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
So who are the members of Crew-7?
Jasmine Moghbeli
Jasmin Moghbeli, a New York native, became a NASA Astronaut Candidate in 2017 and started her duties in the same year's August. She holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering with IT from MIT and an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. A Marine Corps test pilot with experience in the AH-1W Super Cobra, Moghbeli has completed over 150 combat missions and logged 2,000 flight hours in 25+ aircraft types. She's an honored graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. She's set to command NASA's SpaceX Crew-7 mission to the ISS, slated for 2023 or later.
"We're proud to join this team," said NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli shortly after arrival.
Andreas Mogensen
Andreas Mogensen is a highly accomplished ESA astronaut from Denmark. He holds a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College London and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Mogensen has diverse experience, from oil rig engineering in Africa to wind turbine control systems in Denmark. Selected as an astronaut in 2009, he has completed comprehensive training programs, including cave and undersea analog missions. He was also involved in mission control and leadership roles at NASA's JSC from 2016-2022. Mogensen has received several awards and is a member of various aerospace organizations. His next mission, Huginn, will make him the first non-US pilot on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in late summer 2023. He first went to space in 2015 as the inaugural Danish astronaut.
Andreas Mogensen from the European Space Agency echoed her sentiment, "Looking forward to an incredible mission."
Satoshi Furukawa
Satoshi Furukawa is a JAXA astronaut born in 1964 in Kanagawa, Japan. He holds an M.D. and Ph.D. in Medical Science from the University of Tokyo. Furukawa previously spent 165 days on ISS Expeditions 28 and 29 in 2011, where he worked on Kibo experiments and ISS maintenance. He has been involved in various training programs, including NASA's NEEMO. From 2014-2021, he led JAXA’s Space Biomedical Research Group. Furukawa is currently training for another long-duration ISS mission set for 2023.
Furukawa, addressing in both English and Japanese, stated, "I have arrived at my place of work, the ISS, and am excited to work with this international team."
Konstantin Borisov
Konstantin Sergeyevich Borisov, born in 1984 in Smolensk, Russia, is a mission specialist for SpaceX Crew-7 launching in August 2023. Prior to space, he had a 13-year career at Volvo Vostok in roles like analyst and project manager. Crew-7 is his first space mission, and he will work alongside astronauts Andreas Mogensen and Jasmin Moghbeli. Borisov's corporate background and upcoming mission could open doors for future space roles or international collaborations.
Borisov highlighted the diversity, saying, "We are the most international SpaceX flight. You see five nationalities here; it's important to work together in unity."
The new crew is set to engage in scientific experiments focusing on astronauts' sleep and microbial samples within the ISS.
