The religious administration of Muslims in Chechnya has introduced a set of "Mandatory norms of weddings," guided by the directives of the head of the republic, Ramzan Kadyrov. These norms, formulated in line with Islamic principles and regional traditions, aim to regulate the conduct of weddings within the Chechen society.
The document explicitly states that certain elements deemed incompatible with Islam or Chechen laws are prohibited. These include items such as diamond rings, fur clothing, household appliances, apartments, and cars. The norms seek to eliminate excesses and lavish expenditures that deviate from religious and cultural values.
However, the guidelines highlight specific traditional attributes that must be upheld in Chechen weddings. Cash gifts of 50,000 rubles (approximately $562), along with tea, sugar, and a ram, are specified as essential components of the wedding process. Furthermore, parents are granted the authority to impose fines as they see fit, reinforcing the importance of adhering to the established norms.
The dress code for brides is also addressed in the document. It emphasizes that bridal attire must align with both Islamic principles and Chechen customs. This stipulation underscores the significance of preserving cultural identity and religious values during weddings.
The initiative to develop these mandatory norms was instigated by Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya. Kadyrov expressed the need for reform due to certain customs that were deemed nonsensical and conflicting with religious principles and traditional values. The newly introduced norms seek to align wedding practices with Islamic teachings while preserving the authenticity of Chechen culture.
