Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate for the highest state position in Ecuador, was killed at a pre-election rally, as reported by El Universo.
President Guillermo Lasso confirmed the information. The incident occurred in the city of Quito. At the end of the rally, Villavicencio was shot three times in the head. He died on the spot. Eight participants of the event were also wounded.
According to a survey, 59-year-old Villavicencio could have advanced to the second round of elections, gathering 13.2% of the voters' support, alongside Luisa Gonzalez, a candidate from the Movement for the Citizen Revolution party, a left-centrist politician, who had 26.6%.
Villavicencio had previously worked as a journalist for a newspaper. He entered politics in 2013.
