The section of the bridge was already scheduled for demolition, Greek City Times has reported.
In the Greek city of Patras, work on the collapsed car bridge continues as there are concerns that people might still be trapped under the debris. Currently, two fatalities and 12 injuries have been reported.
Greek media reports suggest that the structure had been facing durability issues, and repair work had been ongoing for several years. Specialists had planned to dismantle the bridge section on Sunday, but it collapsed just before the start of the work, trapping people who had sought shelter from the heat underneath.
The police have arrested the supervisor and several employees of the company responsible for the construction work.
The bridge had structural issues, and repair work began in 2021. On July 20, the section that eventually collapsed was closed for maintenance by the Achaia Police Department. The plan was to demolish the damaged part on Sunday. Unfortunately, before the demolition, the section unexpectedly collapsed, falling onto a group of people who were standing underneath it.
Rescue operations were promptly initiated to search for other potential victims trapped under the debris. A team of 35 firefighters, two EMAK disaster response units, and search-and-rescue dogs were deployed to the scene. Additionally, five ambulances and a mobile medical unit were on standby to provide medical assistance.
Earlier, it was reported that two people lost their lives, and several others were injured due to the collapse of a bridge section on the outskirts of the Greek city of Patras.
The injured, whose condition is deemed quite serious, were taken to hospitals. Two of the wounded were employees of local services involved in repair work.
