Climate activist Greta Thunberg was forcefully removed by the police from a protest in Malmo, Sweden, after being fined by a local court for disobeying a police order during her previous demonstration, Al Jazeera reports.
Thunberg, known for her weekly protests in front of the Swedish parliament, admitted to disobeying the police order but pleaded not guilty, arguing that her actions were necessary. Despite the fine and court proceedings, Thunberg asserted that climate activists would not back down and emphasized the need for changing laws to address the climate crisis.
Following the court's sentencing, Thunberg and other activists returned to Malmo harbor to block traffic again, resulting in another confrontation with the police. During the court proceedings, Thunberg justified her actions, stating that she believes the world is facing an emergency that threatens lives, health, and property.
The court ordered Thunberg to pay a fine of $144 and an additional $96 to Sweden's crime victims' fund, based on her reported income. The offense of disobeying a police order carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison.
