In light of the ongoing writers' strike in Hollywood, George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, provided updates on his various projects in a recent blog post, reported Entertainment Weekly on July 24. He revealed that his overall deal with HBO, signed in 2021 to develop new projects, was suspended on June 1 due to the strike. This suspension is part of a broader industry trend, with other major studios also halting first-look and overall deals in response to the strike.
While Martin is affected by the strike, he remains busy with non-studio related work. He continues to work diligently on his highly anticipated novel, The Winds of Winter, from the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Additionally, progress is being made on the script for his Game of Thrones stage play, The Iron Throne.
Despite his involvement being on hold, production for the second season of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel, continues smoothly in the U.K., where local union rules allow for filming to proceed unaffected. Martin expressed the importance of the strike, emphasising that it is not just for established writers and producers but also for those aspiring to break into the industry. He acknowledged the challenging nature of the strike and hopes for a resolution without it becoming as bitter as the infamous 1985 strike.
