Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murat Nurtleu, recently attended the seventh online ministerial-level meeting of the "Global Coalition to Address Synthetic Drug Threats." The meeting, held on July 7, was organized at the invitation of the United States Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken.
With representatives from 60 countries in attendance, Secretary Blinken called upon the international community to unite their efforts through the Global Coalition in combating the illegal production and trafficking of synthetic drugs. The coalition aims to detect emerging trends and effectively respond to the impact of these substances on public health.
During the meeting, Minister Nurtleu highlighted the specific measures outlined in Kazakhstan's Comprehensive Plan to Combat Drug Addiction and Drug Trafficking for 2023-2025. This plan was formulated under the guidance of president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and has enabled the Kazakh government to address the issue of synthetic drugs at both the national and regional levels.
Minister Nurtleu emphasized the work carried out by Kazakhstan, including the finalization of national legislation, the suppression of drug trafficking, the detection of criminal offenses, and the dismantling of organized criminal groups and clandestine labs. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration with neighboring countries and international organizations in combating the synthetic drug trade.
Nurtleu stressed that the proliferation of synthetic drugs poses a significant threat to Kazakhstan's stability and security. He further stated that these substances hinder the development of countries and serve as a major source of funding for terrorism and other transnational criminal activities.
The panel discussions were held to address the key challenges and threats related to current drug-related crimes. The participants agreed to work together in a concerted effort to effectively address the problem.
As a result of the meeting, the participants adopted a Declaration outlining a comprehensive and systematic response to the emerging threats posed by synthetic drugs. This declaration signifies the commitment of the coalition countries to tackle the issue collectively and implement measures to counteract the illicit drug trade.
