Tashkent ranks among the top ten cheapest cities in the world for foreigners, according to the consulting agency Mercer, Spot.uz reports.
Each year, the agency compiles a cost of living ranking for expatriates, measuring the comparative cost of more than 200 categories in each city, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment. The data was collected in March of this year. The capital of Uzbekistan secured the tenth position in the ranking of the cheapest cities for foreign workers, dropping three places compared to the previous year.
Tashkent slightly trailed behind Tunis, Durban (South Africa), Ankara, and Windhoek (Namibia). Expatriates in Central Asia find it most affordable to live in Dushanbe and Bishkek. The cheapest cities in the world are recognized as Islamabad, Karachi (both in Pakistan), and Havana (Cuba).
Among the top ten most expensive places, five are European cities, with four of them located in Switzerland and the fifth being Copenhagen. The first two places were taken by Asian cities: Hong Kong and Singapore. New York, Tel Aviv, and Nassau (Bahamas) also made it to the list.
In 2023, Mercer researchers note inflationary pressures in different countries around the world. During the analysis of the consumer basket, they identified sugar, vegetable oil, and butter as the items with the most significant price increases.
