China experienced its lowest marriage rate last year, which coincided with a decline in the birth rate, raising concerns among the government regarding the country's demographic crisis, CNN reports.
The Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs informs that approximately 6.83mn couples got married in 2022. This marks a decrease of about 10.5% compared to the 7.63mn marriages registered in 2021, representing the lowest figure since 1986 when the ministry began publishing marriage statistics.
China witnessed its highest number of marriages in 2013, with over 13mn Chinese couples tying the knot, nearly double the number for 2022.
Furthermore, China's population declined in 2022 for the first time in over 60 years, with a birth rate of only 6.77 births per 1,000 people, the lowest rate since the establishment of communist China in 1949.
Chinese officials perceive a direct correlation between the diminishing number of marriages and the country's declining birth rate.
