Radio Free Asia reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has issued a classified directive to local authorities, instructing them to take measures to prevent suicides in their respective areas.
The order characterizes suicide as an act of treason against socialism and the motherland. Kim Jong-un emphasized the responsibility of local authorities at the provincial, city, and district levels to address this issue and prevent suicides.
The South Korean National Intelligence Service reported at the end of May that the number of suicides in North Korea had risen by 40% compared to the previous year. The administration attributed this increase to various domestic concerns stemming from the challenging conditions faced by the population in North Korea.
Specifically, in the city of Chongjin and its surrounding districts, there have been reports of 35 suicides, with instances where entire families take their own lives. A source highlighted that extreme poverty and hunger are major factors contributing to these suicides, making it difficult to propose effective preventive measures.
