Russian commanders in Ukraine have recently started punishing the military for indiscipline, British Ministry of Defense reports based on intelligence information.
According to intelligence information, Russian forces who violated discipline are being thrown into dungeons dug into the ground and covered with bars. In most cases, such punishment is allegedly applied to the Russian soldiers who drank alcohol and tried to cancel the contract.
According to the report, in the early months of the war, guilty servicemen were given lighter sentences, and those who refused to continue their service were allowed to return home safely. Since autumn, "more drastic measures" have been introduced to maintain discipline in the army.
Britain's Ministry of Defense says the trend has intensified since Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov began leading the Russian group in Ukraine. Prisons were common during the wars in Chechnya, and this method of punishment was used by both federal forces and separatists. The militants also reportedly kept the hostages in such prisons.
