British Air Force intercepted two Russian fighter jets and one reconnaissance aircraft flying close to NATO airspace over the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea on April 17, The Independent reports.
Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets of the British and German air forces reportedly flew to the eastern part of the NATO border, near Estonia. A Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane was detected in the air, it was directed toward Kaliningrad. It was accompanied by two Su-27 Flanker-B fighters.
According to one of the pilots who participated in the operation, the Royal Air Force often encounters Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea, so it is common to intercept aircraft.
"Nevertheless, the importance of intercepting Russian aircraft and the commitment to the collective defense of NATO airspace remain unchanged and unwavering. The capture of aircraft proved that we can act quickly and decisively with our German allies," the pilot said.
British Royal Air Force and German fighter jets intercepted a Russian plane in Estonian airspace in the first joint operation on March 15. According to reports, the Russian plane did not alert the Estonian air traffic control service.
