Uzbekistan’s higher education institutions have expanded their presence in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds. A total of seven universities from the country were ranked across 12 subject areas, up from the previous year by two universities and four subjects.
Among the standout results, Tashkent State Technical University entered the top 101–150 globally in petroleum engineering, marking the highest result for Uzbekistan’s technical education to date.
Significant improvements were also recorded by National University of Uzbekistan, which rose sharply in physics and astronomy (401–450, up from 601–675) and improved its position in mathematics (301–350).
In the humanities and social sciences, Uzbekistan State World Languages University advanced in linguistics to the 201–250 range, while Tashkent State University of Economics entered the rankings for the first time in several disciplines, including law (251–300), economics and econometrics (251–300), and business and management studies (551–600).
Other institutions also expanded their presence. Samarkand State University was ranked in modern languages (251–300), while Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature improved its position in the same field to the 251–300 range.
The Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers National Research University entered new subject rankings, including agriculture and forestry (401–475) and electrical and electronic engineering (501–550), while also being listed in environmental sciences (451–500).
Uzbekistan’s universities are also gaining wider regional recognition, with 22 institutions ranked in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, including eight that improved their positions, reflecting rising academic standards and growing international competitiveness.
Uzbekistan has recently launched a national university ranking system based on 25 performance indicators to strengthen the competitiveness and evaluation of domestic higher education institutions.
