Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan lead efforts to establish transport corridors through Afghanistan

In the wake of recent terrorist attacks in Moscow, discussions around alternative transport routes have gained momentum, particularly in Central Asia. Kazakhstan, in collaboration with Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, is spearheading efforts to establish vital transport corridors through Afghanistan, fostering regional connectivity and trade, Eldaniz Gusseinov, a foreign policy analyst specializing in European and international studies shared.

Two key routes have emerged as focal points of this endeavor:

    • Termez-Mazar-e-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar: With Uzbekistan's participation, this route promises to link Central Asia to the bustling markets of South Asia.
    • Herat-Kandahar-Spin-Buldak: Involving Turkmenistan, this route offers another avenue for trade expansion, particularly for goods originating from Kazakhstan's Mangistau region.

Kazakhstan's commitment to these projects is evident through its plans to supply railway materials for the construction of these routes. By reducing cargo delivery times and costs, Kazakhstan aims to facilitate smoother trade flows among regional countries.

Of particular interest is Kazakhstan's ambition to supply flour through these routes. Leveraging its geographical advantage, Kazakhstan intends to use the Beineu terminal in the Mangistau region to export flour and grain directly to Afghanistan. With a robust capacity, the terminal is poised to handle substantial volumes of grain and flour, further bolstering Kazakhstan's role as a key trade partner in the region.

Moreover, Kazakhstan's proposal to facilitate the transportation of Chinese products to Afghanistan underscores its commitment to enhancing regional trade dynamics. By leveraging existing infrastructure and forging strategic partnerships, Kazakhstan seeks to position itself as a pivotal link in the regional trade network.

After months of negotiations, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan have reached an agreement to establish a dry port in Herat. This development marks a milestone in enhancing regional trade, as the port will serve as a crucial hub for multimodal transportation, including an oil terminal with an annual capacity of 1 mn tonnes.

The collaborative efforts of these nations signify a shared commitment to fostering regional stability and economic prosperity. Promoting transport routes through Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are laying the groundwork for enhanced trade and connectivity, ultimately benefiting the entire region.
