Uzbekistan, Malaysia consider dialogue platform for foreign ministers in Central Asia plus ASEAN format

Uzbekistan, Malaysia consider dialogue platform for foreign ministers in Central Asia plus ASEAN format

Uzbekistan and Malaysia explore innovative Central Asia plus ASEAN foreign ministers dialogue platform, as it was dislcosed in talks between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and  Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on May 17. The talks, which included official delegations from both nations, focused on expanding their friendly ties and multifaceted partnership.

At the outset of the meeting, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to the Malaysian delegation. This high-level visit, the first in 16 years, symbolizes a new era in bilateral relations.

    Strengthening Political and Economic Ties

President Mirziyoyev emphasized Malaysia's dynamic development and global potential, stating,

"Our main goal is to bring practical cooperation with your country to a qualitatively new level.”

Both leaders discussed the importance of strengthening political dialogue, enhancing inter-parliamentary relations, and continuing mutual support within international organizations. They also stressed the need to implement humanitarian and educational programs and intensify tourism and cultural exchanges.

Economic and investment collaboration was a key focus of the negotiations. The leaders noted that the volume of trade turnover between the two countries had more than doubled by the end of last year. They highlighted the increasing number of joint ventures and the rising frequency of flights between Tashkent and Kuala Lumpur. Emphasis was placed on ensuring further growth in trade volumes, achieving a balance in mutual trade indicators, and implementing large joint projects.

    Investment and Industrial Cooperation

Both sides expressed confidence that the outcomes of the Uzbek-Malaysian business forum would expand investment partnerships and cooperation in various industries. These include innovation, industry, green energy, petrochemicals, electrical engineering and electronics, and pharmaceuticals. In support of these efforts, readiness was expressed to establish an Uzbek-Malaysian industrial zone in Uzbekistan.

Agricultural cooperation was also discussed, particularly in introducing water-saving technologies, cultivating and processing fruits and vegetables, and certifying products according to Halal standards. The leaders explored expanding collaboration in information technology, poverty reduction, and transport connectivity.

    Educational and Cultural Exchange

The meeting underscored the importance of transforming the existing joint Trade Committee into an Intergovernmental Commission, with its first meeting scheduled for this year. Both leaders confirmed their commitment to further intensify cultural and humanitarian exchanges. They stressed the need to increase cooperation in training and advanced personnel development in energy, Islamic finance, ecology, artificial intelligence, tourism, and healthcare.

The leaders noted with satisfaction the rapid increase in Malaysian tourists visiting Uzbekistan and discussed measures to implement joint pilgrimage tourism programs, including the “Umrah Plus” project, aimed at strengthening youth dialogue between the two countries.

    Regional and International Cooperation

The leaders exchanged views on regional cooperation in Central and Southeast Asia and addressed Afghan issues. They highlighted the high level of mutual understanding and the importance of continuing mutual support within the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement.

The negotiations, characterized by trust, openness, and friendship, culminated in the signing of a Joint Statement by President Mirziyoyev and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This statement aims to deepen the multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and Malaysia.
