    Kazakhstan's green economy investments soar to $418mn in 2023

    The volume of investments in Kazakhstan's green economy sector reached KZT 201bn ($418mn) in 2023, marking a 365% year-on-year increase, Trend reported citing the Bureau of National Statistics.

    The bulk of these investments, amounting to KZT 199.8bn (about $415mn), was directed towards renewable energy sources. Additionally, KZT 186mn ($386,000) was allocated for energy-saving technologies and enhancing energy efficiency. Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions also saw a notable investment of KZT 1bn ($2.08mn).

    The Abay region emerged as the frontrunner in attracting green economy investments in 2023, with KZT 121.9bn ($253.5mn) dedicated to sustainable projects.

    Kazakhstan's renewable energy sector made significant strides, generating 6.675bn kWh of electricity by the end of 2023. This production accounted for 5.92% of the country's total electrical energy output for the year.

    The nation currently boasts 147 renewable energy facilities (each over 100 kW) with a combined installed capacity of 2,903.54 MW. This includes 59 wind power plants with a capacity of 1,409.55 MW, 46 solar power plants with a capacity of 1,222.61 MW, 39 hydroelectric power plants with a capacity of 269.605 MW, and three biogas power plants with a capacity of 1.77 MW.

    In 2023, 16 new renewable energy facilities with a total installed capacity of 495.57 MW were put into operation. These included 12 wind farms with a combined capacity of 437.1 MW in the Akmola and Zhetysu regions, two hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 3.7 MW in the Almaty and Turkestan regions, and two solar power plants with a capacity of 54.77 MW in the Turkistan region.

    Looking ahead, Kazakhstan plans to commission 25 renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 599.85 MW by 2027, further solidifying its commitment to a sustainable and green future.
