To enhance energy security and diversify gas sources, the European Union (EU) is eyeing Turkmenistan as a significant partner within the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC). A spokesperson from the European Commission's press service highlighted the potential role Turkmenistan could play in these efforts.
The EU is actively engaging with multiple governments as part of the Southern Gas Corridor, with Turkmenistan's plans to increase gas supplies aligning well with the EU's diversification goals, according to a spokesperson.
The EU is keen on continuing dialogues with Turkmenistan, emphasizing energy policy areas such as promoting renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and mitigating methane emissions.
Energy cooperation between the EU and Turkmenistan operates under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2008. This agreement spans energy security, mutual infrastructure projects, renewable energy initiatives, and energy efficiency enhancements.
Turkmenistan boasts substantial hydrocarbon reserves, estimated by Turkmengaz, at over 71bn tons of oil equivalent. This includes more than 20bn tons of oil and an impressive 50 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.
Central to these advancements is the Southern Gas Corridor, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at transporting natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe through Türkiye. This project seeks to diversify gas supply sources, reduce Europe's dependence on Russian gas, and enhance regional energy security.
