Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended a memorial ceremony for the country’s first President Islam Karimov in Tashkent on September 2, laying a wreath at his monument and paying tribute to his role in Uzbekistan’s independence and development.
Mirziyoyev visited the Islam Karimov Memorial and Educational Complex, where he laid a wreath at the monument to the first president. Karimov led Uzbekistan during a complex and responsible period in the country’s history. His name is closely associated with Uzbekistan’s independence, the restoration of national statehood and the country’s transition to an independent path of development.
During the ceremony, Karimov’s contribution to strengthening the foundations of independence, maintaining peace and stability and improving the wellbeing of the Uzbek people was highlighted. The ceremony also recalled the broader significance of independence, including the restoration of national identity, the Uzbek language, religious traditions and cultural values.
Under Mirziyoyev’s attention, extensive efforts have been carried out to preserve Karimov’s memory. The Islam Karimov Memorial and Educational Complex was established in Tashkent, while visiting his mausoleum in Samarkand has become a tradition during presidential visits to the city.
The ceremony included a Quran recitation and prayers, with Karimov’s contributions to Uzbekistan’s independence, peace and stability and the welfare of the population remembered.
Representatives of the chambers of the Oliy Majlis, the Presidential Administration, Cabinet of Ministers, ministries and government agencies, as well as intellectuals and members of the Tashkent public, also laid flowers at Karimov’s monument. Memorial events were also held in Samarkand and Karshi.
