President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with Jonathan Choi Koon-shum, Chairman of Sunwah Group, member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, during a meeting reported by Akorda on February 9.
During the discussion, President Tokayev emphasized Kazakhstan’s focus on maintaining an active and comprehensive strategic partnership with China. He highlighted the country’s participation in the One Belt, One Road initiative, first announced by Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping in Astana in 2013, and noted the continued growth of trade and economic ties between the two countries. China remains Kazakhstan’s largest trading partner, with trade turnover reaching record levels annually.
President Tokayev also stressed Kazakhstan’s efforts to establish a favorable environment for foreign investment and the provision of comprehensive support for joint strategic projects. In this context, he expressed interest in enhancing practical cooperation with China in the field of artificial intelligence, noting China’s leading position in AI development.
Jonathan Choi Koon-shum acknowledged Kazakhstan’s investment appeal, particularly in the financial sector, attributing this to consistent support from the governments of Kazakhstan and China. He also thanked President Tokayev for the reception and highlighted Kazakhstan’s reliability as a destination for strategic investments.
The meeting addressed potential areas of bilateral cooperation, including finance, energy, digitalization, medicine, agriculture, and construction, with both parties emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration in these sectors.
