Surkhandarya region’s Boysun district witnessed the emergence of oil-containing fluid on the surface at the “M-25” field during the final days of 2025.
The Ministry of Energy provided an update on January 5, reporting that additional containment ponds were constructed around the area and along the streambed to prevent further spread of the fluid.
To prevent its spread, protective containment ponds were built around the site and along a nearby stream. The collected fluid is being transported to two specially isolated sludge ponds with a combined capacity of 5,000 cubic meters.
Authorities said the situation is under constant monitoring and fully contained, while laboratory analysis of samples and geological studies are ongoing to assess processing options.
Cleanup operations are continuing in areas affected during the initial phase of the incident. All work is being carried out in line with industrial and environmental safety requirements, the ministry said, stating that further information will be provided as assessments continue.
The development comes amid heightened public attention to geological and energy-related incidents in the Boysun area. In late November 2025, videos circulated on social media showing what was described as a gas leak in the district. At the time, the Ministry of Energy clarified that the footage was linked to a geological process previously observed at well No. 202 of the M-25 field.
As reported earlier, KazTransOil had announced the resumption of crude oil transit to Uzbekistan, with the Fergana Oil Refinery beginning to receive deliveries in December. By the end of the month, the refinery is expected to process 35,000 tonnes of crude oil, all of which will be supplied to the domestic market. Under the agreement, annual deliveries via Kazakhstan could reach up to 500,000 tonnes in favorable market conditions.
