Uzbekistan is set to expand its cooperation with Italy in the field of nuclear energy, the Uzatom agency reported. A delegation led by Uzatom Director Azim Ahmadkhodjayev visited Genoa, Italy, to discuss collaboration with Ansaldo Energia Holding and its subsidiary Ansaldo Nucleare, which specializes in nuclear energy technologies.
Ansaldo Energia is a leading European energy company engaged in the design, engineering, production, and supply of energy equipment, including steam and gas turbogenerators.
Ansaldo Nucleare has extensive experience in nuclear safety systems, software development, supply of equipment, spent fuel management, and the assessment and maintenance of nuclear power plants in countries including China, Belgium, Slovenia, Hungary, and Ukraine.
During the meeting on October 20, the delegation discussed technological integration for the construction of Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant, as well as adapting Italian auxiliary systems to Uzbekistan’s climatic conditions. The parties also explored involving Italian companies as technical consultants, providing spent fuel management solutions, and cooperating in radioactive waste management.
The Italian side expressed interest in advisory work on establishing a national regulatory framework, licensing, and joint research and development (R&D) activities. These initiatives aim to enhance nuclear technologies and train personnel in both countries.
This follows a memorandum of understanding signed in May 2025 between Uzatom and Ansaldo Energia, which focuses on developing human resources, scientific and technical potential, and industrial cooperation by leveraging Italian expertise and advanced technologies.
Ansaldo Energia, through its subsidiary, handles all nuclear sector activities, including the design and construction of new plants, safe dismantling of decommissioned plants, and radioactive waste management.
