China National Petroleum Corporation to develop underground gas storage facilities in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan eyes to expand its energy infrastructure with the construction of underground gas storage facilities, according to the presidential press service.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with Chairman Dai Houliang, of Chinese energy giant China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in Beijing on September 2 to discuss the company's investment plans in Uzbekistan. The talks focused on the development of underground natural gas storage, modernization of energy infrastructure, implementation of modern metrological standards, and introduction of innovative solutions.

 

CNPC's direct investments in Uzbekistan currently exceed $5bn. The company, one of the world's largest energy firms, specializes in high-tech projects for the extraction and processing of hydrocarbons both domestically and internationally, with a market capitalization of over $200bn.

During the Beijing visit, President Mirziyoyev also met with Zhou Yuxian, Chairman of China National Building Materials (CNBM), to discuss projects including the modernization of pumping stations, construction of wind and solar power plants, energy storage systems, and local production of alternative energy components.

 

Special emphasis was placed on improving energy efficiency in Uzbek industrial enterprises, with a dedicated “road map” ordered to accelerate the implementation of these projects. CNBM is a major global conglomerate in building materials and renewable energy, ranked among the world's top 500 companies.

Additionally, the president met with Shen Yanfeng, chairman of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), to review plans for technology transfer, development of uranium deposits, geological exploration, and cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy programs.

 

CNNC is a leading state-owned enterprise covering the full cycle of civil nuclear projects, from uranium exploration and enrichment to the construction of nuclear power plants.

Finally, discussions with Zhu Hongbin, CEO of Henan Investment Group, focused on energy and infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan, including coal development, modern power plant construction, energy storage, bioproducts, waste recycling, and clean energy generation.

 

President Mirziyoyev instructed the creation of separate “road maps” to ensure timely execution of all agreements with Chinese partners.
