Kazakhstan and Tajikistan recently held the 19th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in Astana, concluding with the signing of a joint protocol.

The meeting was co-chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar and First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Hokim Kholikzoda.
Roman Sklyar noted that the commission serves as a key mechanism for advancing bilateral relations. The agenda covered further implementation of high-level agreements, expansion of investment opportunities, and strengthening of interregional cooperation.
Hokim Kholikzoda stressed that the meeting’s results would give new momentum to the growing partnership, with active development across trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian fields. Discussions focused on prospects for collaboration in trade, industrial cooperation, agriculture, transport, and logistics.

Both sides underlined the importance of preparing thoroughly for upcoming summit meetings to ensure tangible progress. The next, 20th meeting of the commission will be hosted by Tajikistan in 2026.
Kazakhstan remains a major trade and economic partner for Tajikistan. In 2024, bilateral trade reached $1.3bn, up 7.4% from the previous year. The two leaders have set a target to raise this figure to $2bn.
In 2024, cargo traffic between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan grew by 8% to 5.1mn tons. In the first half of 2025, volumes reached 2.7mn tons, up 12.1% year-on-year. Road freight rose sharply by 45% to 494,000 tons. New opportunities are also emerging for supplying Kazakh railway equipment to Tajikistan. Kazakhstan is among the top four foreign investors in Tajikistan, with cumulative investments exceeding $146mn.
