Kazakhstan has taken another step toward digitalizing its fuel and energy sector by launching a pilot project that uses artificial intelligence to transmit gas meter readings. The initiative, spearheaded by QazaqGaz Aimaq, is currently being tested in the Kyzylorda, Kostanay, and Turkestan regions.

The core of the new system is a mobile application that allows users to take a photo of their gas meter. The app then uses AI technology to automatically recognize and process the readings, eliminating the need for manual inspection and significantly reducing the chances of human error.
So far, more than 7,000 users have downloaded the app, with the highest uptake in Turkestan, where it has received favorable feedback from consumers. According to QazaqGaz Aimaq, the digital tool has improved invoice processing times, reduced operator workload, and enhanced the transparency of billing procedures.
Future updates to the app will include features such as access to payment history, alerts for meter verification dates, and notifications about scheduled maintenance on gas networks. A virtual assistant is also in development, along with a reward system offering bonuses and cashback to users who consistently submit accurate readings on time.
The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan has endorsed the project as part of its broader support for digital transformation in the energy sector. Officials say such innovations are key to improving public service delivery and fostering accountability across utility networks.
