"We call on Russian authorities to treat Uzbek citizens with respect" — Uzbekistan's MFA

"We call on Russian authorities to treat Uzbek citizens with respect" — Uzbekistan's MFA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan has expressed serious concern over reports of disrespectful treatment of Uzbek nationals in Russia and has called on Russian authorities to ensure the dignity and rights of Uzbek citizens are upheld.

According to a statement released by the ministry’s press service, a regular monthly meeting between Uzbek and Russian officials was held to discuss migration issues.

During the talks, the Uzbek side raised alarm over instances of unauthorized searches and mistreatment of Uzbek citizens in Russia, describing such actions as damaging to the spirit of bilateral relations.

Attention was drawn to the fact that such incidents undermine friendly relations between the two countries and require concrete measures to prevent recurrence.

The ministry reiterated that protecting the rights and interests of Uzbek citizens abroad remains a top priority. It also noted that Uzbekistan’s Embassy in Moscow is actively engaged in diplomatic dialogue with the Russian side to address these concerns.

"The Uzbek side calls for ensuring compliance with international law and human rights for all citizens," the ministry stated. “In this regard, we call on the relevant Russian authorities to treat Uzbek citizens with respect and not to degrade their honor and dignity.”

As part of its efforts, the embassy has submitted a formal diplomatic note to Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requesting clarification and a legal assessment of reported human rights violations in Moscow. The note highlighted recent incidents involving migrants with documentation issues who were reportedly detained and taken to internal affairs departments.

Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry said it would continue to monitor the situation closely and take further steps if necessary to protect its citizens.

The development comes amid growing attention to the treatment of Central Asian migrants in Russia, where concerns over discrimination and law enforcement practices have persisted in recent years.

Earlier, reports alleged that Russian OMON officers used physical force against foreign nationals during a law enforcement operation in Moscow’s Sokolniki district, sparking widespread concern and media coverage.  Preliminary reports indicated that five to six individuals with documentation issues were detained during the raid and taken to the local internal affairs department for clarification.
