Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov met with Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce, Nuriddin Azizi, to explore deeper trade and economic cooperation during the Astana International Forum.

The talks covered a wide range of sectors, including transport and logistics, agriculture, digitalization, healthcare, and education. A key topic was enhancing bilateral trade and diversifying Kazakhstan’s exports to Afghanistan. In 2023, trade between the two countries reached $545.2mn, with Kazakh exports accounting for $527.7mn, making Kazakhstan one of Afghanistan’s top ten trading partners.
One of the most significant infrastructure projects discussed was the Torghundi–Herat trans-Afghan railway. Both sides emphasized its regional importance as a critical link connecting Central and South Asia and enhancing the North–South transport corridor. The parties also considered the participation of Kazakh companies in joint ventures in Afghanistan, particularly in geological exploration and mining.
Digital cooperation was another area of focus. Kazakhstan offered continued support and consultations on implementing modern digital technologies in Afghanistan.
“Kazakhstan remains committed to uniting international efforts for the region’s sustainable development,” Prime Minister Bektenov stated. “We are a key food supplier to Afghanistan and are ready to expand our exports to include new grain types, livestock products, and confectionery. The Kazakhstan Trade House in Herat is already operating, and we plan to open another in Kabul.”

Minister Azizi expressed Afghanistan’s interest in closer ties, especially in IT, agriculture, and machinery imports.
“Kazakhstan is an important partner,” Azizi said. “We value your product quality and see real opportunities in technology and agricultural cooperation.”
The discussion also recognized the role of the newly established UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty as a driver for regional progress and stability.
