South Korea plans to provide a grant of $40mn to support the development of Uzbekistan’s transport system, according to officials at a recent meeting between the two countries.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Transport in Tashkent with a delegation from the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT). During the talks, both sides discussed cooperation prospects and the participation of Korean companies in key transport projects across Uzbekistan.
The Korean delegation presented the “Master Plan for the Development of an Intelligent Transport System in Tashkent,” which outlines proposals to modernize the city’s public transport network using advanced technologies.
A flagship project under this plan is the introduction of a smart bus system, set to be implemented by the International Contractors Association of Korea (ICAK) from 2026 to 2029. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and convenience of public transportation in Tashkent.
Furthermore, the development of a bus rapid transit (BRT) system with dedicated bus lanes is planned between 2027 and 2032. The BRT system is expected to improve the speed and reliability of buses, making public transport more attractive to residents.
The meeting also included discussions on potential financing options for these projects and ways to strengthen long-term cooperation between Uzbekistan and South Korea in the transport sector.
