Uzbekistan’s life expectancy hits 75.1 years in 2024 amid declining birth and marriage rates

Uzbekistan’s life expectancy hits 75.1 years in 2024 amid declining birth and marriage rates

The average life expectancy at birth in Uzbekistan reached 75.1 years in 2024, according to the National Statistics Committee.

This marks an improvement compared to 1991, when the average life expectancy was 66.4 years. Over the decades, the figure has steadily increased: 69.1 years in 1995, 70.8 in 2000, 71.8 in 2005, and 73.0 in 2010. It continued to rise to 73.6 years in 2015 and slightly dipped to 73.4 in 2020 before reaching the new peak in 2024.

Despite the increase in life expectancy, the Statistics Agency estimates that 223,900 people are expected to die in Uzbekistan in 2025. The current average life expectancy across all age groups stands at 74.3 years. Notably, more than half of all deaths in the country are attributed to diseases of the circulatory system, underscoring the need for enhanced public health interventions in this area.

In terms of birth rates, Uzbekistan recorded 926,400 births in 2024, including 479,500 boys and 446,900 girls. For the first time since 2018, the country witnessed a decline in annual birth numbers. The figure for 2024 is not only lower than in 2023 but also below the 2022 level.

This downward trend affected all regions, although Surkhandarya continues to report the highest birth rate, while Karakalpakstan has the lowest. The decline is more pronounced in urban areas, where births fell from 480,200 in 2023 to 454,500 in 2024. In rural areas, the number dropped from 481,800 to 471,900 over the same period.

Marriage rates have also declined. In 2024, only 271,800 marriages were registered across Uzbekistan — the lowest figure in at least 15 years. For comparison, 292,300 marriages were recorded in 2010. The data shows a near-even split between urban and rural marriages, with 136,700 (50.3%) taking place in cities and 135,100 (49.7%) in rural areas.

Additionally, the average age at marriage continues to increase gradually. In 2024, men married at an average age of 27.1 years, while women married at 22.3 years — both figures are 0.1 years higher than the previous year.

The regions with the highest number of registered marriages in 2024 were Samarkand (31,400), Kashkadarya (29,200), and Fergana (29,200). These demographic changes indicate a broader societal shift in Uzbekistan, with improving life expectancy on one hand and declining birth and marriage rates on the other.
