Uzbekistan and China have agreed to establish the Research Center for Ecology and Environment of Central Asia with its headquarters in Tashkent. The initiative was formalized during a meeting between Uzbekistan’s Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, Aziz Abdukhakimov, and Professor He Hongping, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Ecology, focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in environmental protection, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the Intergovernmental Agreement on Environmental Protection signed in January 2024.
Key projects discussed include the development of halophyte gardens in Arnasay, Karmana, Mubarak, Karakul, and Nukus districts, the delivery of 1.4 tons of seeds to Uzbekistan's Forestry Agency, and the deployment of digital pollution monitoring systems. China also pledged expert support for Uzbekistan’s national “Yashil Makon” (Green Nation) initiative.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Ecology and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS XIEG)of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Minister Abdukhakimov and CAS XIEG Director General Professor Zhang Yuanming formalized the agreement.
Under the memorandum, the new Center will be established at the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies – “Green University”. It will serve as a regional hub for scientific research, training, technology exchange, and the promotion of sustainable practices.
The scope of cooperation includes:
- Hosting joint scientific conferences and seminars
- Conducting collaborative environmental research and publications
- Equipping laboratories with modern technology
- Launching applied ecological projects
- Building human resource capacity through education and training
