Kazakhstan aims to provide complete access to clean drinking water by 2025, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov said during a government meeting on June 11. This statement was made during discussions on improving water supply services in both urban and rural areas. At the end of last year, water supply services covered 98.9% of Kazakhstan's urban population and 96.6% of its rural population.
Nine regions achieved full urban coverage, while the lowest coverage levels were found in the Abai and Pavlodar regions. To address these gaps, priority funding is being directed to areas with the lowest access rates.
Currently, 29 projects focused on constructing and reconstructing pipelines are in progress across nine regions. These projects aim to develop and upgrade 2,000 kilometres of water pipelines, improving water supply to 437 settlements. Among these, 44 settlements, with a total population of 92,000 people, will be connected to a centralized water supply. Additionally, five more projects are under development, pending state approval, which will enhance water supply in another 200 settlements.
In 2024, the national budget allocated KZT 218bn ($483.5 mn) for the construction and reconstruction of water supply and sewage systems. This significant investment highlights the government's commitment to enhancing water infrastructure throughout the country.
