Uzbekistan exported over 500,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables in 1Q24, the State Statistics Agency reports. The exports were valued at almost $300 mn. This marks a 43.3% increase from the same period in 2023. Fruits and vegetables made up 3.5% of the country's total exports for this period. The primary markets for these exports were Russia (26.3%), Pakistan (24.2%), Kazakhstan (13%), and China (9.3%).
Uzbekistan plans to introduce special corridors at select customs posts to streamline the export of perishable goods like cabbage, onions, and cherries. These corridors will be established at busy border crossings.
Earlier, Daryo reported that effective May 14, 2024, Uzbekistan's Cabinet of Ministers has implemented price controls on the export of fruits and vegetables.
The new regulation mandates that previously suggested prices will now serve as the minimum allowable prices for exported fruits and vegetables. Exporting below these government-determined prices is prohibited, regardless of quality, variety, or other differentiating factors within the produce.
The new regulation reduces the attractiveness of investing in agricultural production and affects Uzbekistan's reputation as a reliable trading partner for major importers, as long-term contractual partnerships become more uncertain.
