In an event held in the U.S. state of New Jersey, UFC 302 featured a main event between lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and top contender Dustin Poirier.
Makhachev asserted his dominance early. In the first round, Makhachev executed a takedown, bringing Poirier to the mat. From there, he applied pressure, attempting to secure a choke. Poirier spent the entirety of the first round defending from the ground.
The second round mirrored the first, with Makhachev maintaining his advantage. Early in the third round, Poirier was caught by two knee strikes from Makhachev. Makhachev then executed another takedown. The round ended with both fighters exchanging blows.
In the fourth round, the fighters continued to trade strikes. In the fifth round, Makhachev forced Poirier to submit with a choke, retaining his lightweight championship belt.
