Sulton Nuriev, a 39-year-old Uzbekistan national, has been sentenced to 19 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Wendy W. Berger for his role in the transportation of child sex abuse materials (CSAM), the Department of Justice reported. The sentence, which includes a lifetime of supervised release, follows Nuriev's guilty plea entered on September 26, 2023.
On January 13, 2022, Nuriev departed from Orlando, Florida, to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Just over a month later, on February 20, 2022, he returned to Orlando from Tashkent. However, upon his reentry into the United States, a thorough border search of Nuriev's cellphone conducted by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent uncovered evidence - child sex abuse images were found stored on the device.
It was discovered that Nuriev had been masquerading online as a 12-year-old boy, enticing underage girls to produce sexually explicit images of themselves.
The investigation into Nuriev's actions was a joint effort by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Shannon Laurie and Courtney Richardson-Jones.
The Department of Justice launched Project Safe Childhood in May 2006 to combat the escalating issue of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Spearheaded by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood mobilizes federal, state, and local resources to track down, apprehend, and prosecute individuals involved in the sexual exploitation of children, while prioritizing the identification and rescue of victims.
